IMAGE ACTION SITUATION
The theatre workshop by director Jana Svobodová is intended for actors, dancers, performers and visual artists.
The subject of the intensive weekend workshop will be creative work as an impulse for theatre actions, story, situation and sound. The starting point for acting work will in this case be an image by Edward Hopper, an original representative of American modern painting. His work is characterized by the realistic depiction of various environments in which one or more lonely figures are lost. Looking at Hopper’s images compels one to ask: Who are these people? What are they thinking about? What will happen to them in five minutes, in two days, in a week or a year? How did they get into their situation?
In her work as a director, Jana Svobodová is inspired by moments of empty space. The task of the actor-performer is by means of his relationship with the partner, the architecture of the given space and the audience to permit a theatrical situation to be created, to develop it further, repeat it and connect it to the greater whole. Each of these steps is based on the Viewpoints method.
Jana Svobodová is a theatre director who also focuses on teaching theatre techniques leading to free expression on the stage. She is a graduate of DAMU and later studied the Body Weather method under Japanese dancer Min Tanaka and has collaborated with American director and theatre reformer Peter Schumann (Bread and Puppet Theater). In 1992 she met American director Anne Bogart (SITI Company) and her directorial and educational methods. From 1997 - 2007 under her guidance she participated in workshops in Prague and the United States. In 2007 she translated the book Viewpoints by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau. In her work as a director and teacher Jana combines the Viewpoints method with her other experiences.
