Gob Squad / Campo: Before Your Very Eyes

For the first time in their 17 year history, Gob Squad do not appear onstage themselves, instead directing a group of 8-14 year olds. As the audience observe them in a "safe-room" made of one-way mirrors like insects in a jam jar, the children onstage peer into the future at themselves as adults, and nostalgically back at their recent past. And as we try to stop the process of aging and preserve youth as long as we can, they prepare to leave childhood behind forever. Through the complex interaction of live performance and recorded material, Gob Squad turn ideas about the wisdom of age and the innocence of youth on their head. Gob Squad’s Before Your Very Eyes is the last part of the CAMPO trilogy of theatre works with children, made for an adult audience. The first part was Josse De Pauw’s üBUNG, followed by Tim Etchells‘ That Night Follows Day.

Gob Squad first met the children in early 2009. Most of the texts were developed during improvisation and in collaboration with the performers. Before Your Very Eyes premiered in Berlin in April 2011.

As a 5 year old I have just started to learn what time passing is
I can even remember my age all by myself
One year is 20 percent of my life
That’s a long time….too long for me to really imagine.

As a 39 year old I am half way through my life
So unless my batteries run out, I get eaten by a lion or crushed by a machine
I roughly have a good idea how much time I have left.

As an 84 year old
Memories have been recalled so many times - they are true regardless of the fact.
All the time I have had is present and buried within me.
How long is this hour that we will spend together with the selves of our past?
(Gob Squad)
