Ann van den Broek / 420PEOPLE — Phrasing the Pain, Small Hour

PHRASING THE PAIN

choreography: Ann van den Broek

For the first time ever, the prestigious contemporary dance company 420PEOPLE are about to present a production made-to-measure for the company by a foreign choreographer. Ann van den Broek, the reputed innovator, among other things the awardee of the Dutch dance prize Zwaan she gained with Co(te)lette will come to Prague and work intensely with the company to present original movement material arising from her method which could easily be labeled as „to the core" of mind and movement.

Phrasing the Pain is a new group piece based on an original movement phrase, the pain phrase, used in the production I SOLO MENT (Ann Van den Broek, 2008). This movement phrase originally sprung forth from the feelings of pain and sadness one feels after losing a loved one, a  friend, a parent, a child, etc. All the movements came out of these feelings, not one movement was gratuitous. This pain phrase is the basis of a constantly repetitive and rhythmic  choreography in which the dancers, using that same material, must ‘travel’ through various feelings such as lust, aggression, euphoria, zero-point, to transform this grief into other truths.

A compelling, transforming, emotional, and rhythmic choreography.

Performing: 420PEOPLE – Nataša Novotná, Václav Kuneš, Saša Volný, Milan Odstrčil, Sylva Nečasová, Ombline Noyer, Štěpán Pechar
Music: Arne van Dongen, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

SMALL HOUR

choreography: Václav Kuneš

"...The duet has unbelievable tension; the piece is bulging with inventive choreography, unexpected relationships, many bordering the limits of physical perfection." (Don Nixon, Arts & Theatre Institute Prague)

"Performance of breath-taking beauty and intelligence." (DANCE EUROPE)

When something happens that changes one’s life forever, does “an hour” remain just one hour? We return in our memories to those moments in many following days, months and years afterwards. For how many hours in total? And how many hours do we spend trying to forget it. In both cases we spent again hours accepting it.

The piece was awarded the Czech Theatre Journal and Sazka Award for the best performance of the season, in the category dance and ballet. For her performance in the piece Small Hour Nataša Novotná was awarded the prestigious Thálie Award for an outstanding female performance in 2008.

Small Hour was presented at the DansClick showcase in The Hague in December 2007 to 30 theatre promoters at Korzo theatre. It was selected from over ten works by these promoters to be included in the DansClick tour of the 2008-09 season.
