AKCENT 2011 - KVS (Royal Flemish Theatre): Occupied City
The urban culture of the streets of Brussels in a project by the Royal Flemish Theatre. Flemish 20th-century poetry is contrasted with hip-hop culture of the 21st century. The director Ruud Gielens put the poetry of the interwar Flemish poet Paula Van Ostaijen into the hands of the children of the streets: rappers, street singers, MCs, and breakdancers.
The title Bezette Stad/Ville Occupée (Occupied City) refers to a well known poetry collection that Van Ostaijen wrote during the occupation of Antwerp. “After two successful seasons in Brussels at the KVS (Royal Flemish Theatre) the motley crew of beatboxers, MCs and breakdancers are coming to town to suck you into a truly original, gripping and raw performance.”
